For Mum
On Mother's Day.
How do you repay Someone who gave up so much for you? Their childhood hopes and dreams Professional and non-professional goals You can’t Well, if you can, I’m yet to learn how Because you’re no longer young; Woman sacrificing for child You’re adults, attempting to be friends. I struggle because when you’re finally old enough To even begin to acknowledge the sacrifices The distance between you both seems too far So I will try and jam-pack my limited comprehension Of the Creator’s love for me Into my hugs goodbye Into my messages telling you about my day I hope you know The times I say I love you as I leave It isn’t just a substitute for goodbye It's a memory Of dinner cooked nightly Of clean laundry; fresh sheets Of the stink of bleach; a sparkling bathroom Of back scratches, homework help and drives to swim lessons You aren’t defined by these actions Yet as an adult who can’t do for one What you did for five, I’m merely in awe Forever thankful I love you. -S-2024
